The mosquitoes seem to be winning the war against the effort launched to eliminate them. The number of people down with dengue fever is reported to be increasing. The number of infections for the first quarter of the year is already 60 per cent higher than in the same period last year. During the last peak in 2005, more than 14,000 people were infected and 25 died. If left unchecked, these figures may be breached. What has gone wrong? Are the mosquitoes getting more intelligent? Or, we have not used the right weapon to destroy them? Are the common corridors, drains and streets outside your home the only places where our common enemy harboured? Certainly not. We may be sleeping with our enemy at home. The season is back. It is the duty of each and everyone in Singapore to be on guard. Take immediate measures to check your home. Clear all possible water receptacles which the mosquitoes may use as their breeding ground. For more information on measures against mosquitoes and dengue fever, visit our web library
